Sea Denial and the Volume of Influence

– Note the increase in the Volume of Influence (VOI).

Could the effects of the Inverse Square Law in combination with Checkmate signal the beginning of the end for maritime expeditionary warfare?

A conventional mine has a limited volume of influence as it is fitted with simple means of detecting the presence of vessels, such as contact detonation or magnetic triggering. Checkmate can be equipped with sonar, acoustic or other detectors which allow detection at ranges of a 1,000m or more; once detected Checkmate can launch a torpedo which can home on the vessel and destroy it.
